How do I write a good summary (bio)?

Build a Strong Profile Summary

Your profile summary is your chance to stand out. It goes beyond simply listing companies and job titles—it’s where you showcase your background, experience, and expertise in a way that resonates with clients. Profiles that include a summary consistently attract more client engagement, especially for high-value opportunities such as:

  • Expert calls (average compensation: $350/hour)

  • Written reports (average compensation: $1,000 for a 2-page brief)

Think of your summary as your elevator pitch: a concise, compelling overview of your work experience, key projects, and educational background. You have 1,500 characters (about 2–3 short paragraphs) to highlight your core strengths and expertise (regional and/or subject matter).

Writing Guidelines

  • Write in the first person.

  • Include your undergraduate graduation year. This helps ensure fair compensation, but if you prefer not to share it, that’s fine.

  • Add your location and year of birth (required for client compliance).

  • Start with a clear opening sentence. Lead with a direct statement of your expertise—for example: “I am a cybersecurity specialist with 20 years of experience advising Fortune 500 companies and government agencies.”

  • Highlight your most relevant experience. Focus on the roles, education, projects, memberships, or publications that establish you as an expert. Don’t list everything—select the highlights that reinforce your expertise.

  • Quantify your experience. Use numbers to give weight to your background (e.g., “25 years in industry X”, “10 years advising governments in region Y”).

  • Showcase communication skills. Share examples that illustrate how you’ve delivered insights to a range of audiences, especially in the private sector.

Quick Self-Check

Ask yourself: Does my summary clearly explain what I bring to the table beyond just my work history?

If yes, you’re on the right track.
